Everywhere we go people tell us their personal stories about our father. These stories range from what Bill was like to watch in the courtroom, to what he ordered every time at his favorite restaurant.

I worked as fundraiser at a domestic violence shelter in Ulster County, NY, when I found out that Bill, who I’d long admired, had a home up there. He’d just published his book of poems and was doing a signing at a local grocery store (true!), so I went there, introduced myself, and asked if he’d be willing to do a reading/fundraiser for the shelter. I knew this wasn’t exactly his forte, so I was surprised and delighted when he graciously agreed to do it.

We held the event in a private home on a Sunday afternoon. About 50 people came; Bill read some of the poems from his book and told some wonderful anecdotes. I had written a poem for him in a similar style as his, and presented it to him framed with a sketch someone did of him. I was later told he hung it in his office. I have pictures from the event that I treasure. Whenever I think about him, I find myself smiling. He was a wonderful man.

I’m so looking forward to seeing the film.
